Auli, the renowned winter games destination is a famous hill station in Joshimath town. Located in the hill state of Uttarakhand in northern India, this hill station has gained huge popularity in recent years among honeymooners, travelers, trekking enthusiasts and winter games lovers around the globe. Besides the promotional campaigns by tourism ministry, there are some people who should be duly credited for their individual efforts in promotion of Auli as a renowned hill station. Mr. Kamal Nayan Silori, the reporter for AAJ TAk (national news channel) for almost a decade took the pain to make sure that news about Auli makes headlines in national media. Secondly, the efforts of entrepreneurs in tourism industry like late Mr. Manish Bhujwan (ESKIMO adventures), Mr. Vivek Panwar (XRA) and Mr. Ajay Bhatt (Himalayan Snow Runner) is praise worthy coz, these people with there wisdom and vision made every individual sincere effort to promote Auli as a hill station and winter games destination.
Until the eight decade of last century Joshimath was an idle town used as a base for pilgrimage to Shri Badrinath, Shri Hemkund Sahib and trek to Valley of Flowers. Auli used to be a grazing ground for cattle and potato cultivation zone of Joshimath town. In the eighties the renowned leader of masses, the honorable Mr. Kedar Singh Phonia (former tourism minister of uttar pradesh and uttarakhand) a native of Joshimath, put sincere efforts to bring Auli to limelight. Auli got recognition as a hill station and government machinery started developing Auli as a winter games destination of India. Infrastructure was developed and state of art technology like chair lift, ski lift, snow beaters and snow cutters bought to Auli. Again with the efforts of our former tourism minister, honorable Mr. Kedar Singh Phonia, the ski slopes of Auli were connected to joshimath town center with a cable car project. Today this cable car is the star attraction for tourists as this 4 kms journey provides marvelous, magnificent and mesmerizing views of the majestic snow clad major himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Kamet, Choukhamba, etc.
The national winter games are held almost every year in Auli. Winters are fun here full of festivals and carnivals. In 2011 The south Asian winter games were held in Auli with great success. The slopes received international certification and currently Auli is gearing up for FIS races. In 2019 the lavish multi million wedding of Gupta brothers (businessmen from South Africa) at Auli brought this hill station in international limelight and Auli got recognition as the dream wedding destination.
During summers travelers who wish to escape from the hustle and bustle of crowded cities flock to this hill station to witness the serenity and tranquility ever prevalent here. Here the summers are cool providing enchanting views of green landscapes with cattle grazing at a distance. The fun and pleasure of cable car ride from Joshimath to Auli during summers is worth the expense as it provides birds eye view of Joshimath town, ski slopes and the breath taking views of the spectacular surrounding peaks. The 800 mts chair lift ride, ATV ride and mule rides from auli to gurson bugyal are major summer attractions. Nature walks near Tv tower area in lower Auli is a great leisure round the year, accompanied by chirping of birds, sight of mesmerizing landscapes, spectacular view of peaks and if lucky enough sighting of wild animals like deer.
